Data were obtained by investigating elements of individual strengths: abilities, confidence, and desires, developed from The Model of Strengths (Rapp et al.), in addition to exploring the benefits of nature and social ties unique to snowy regions, which are environmental strengths. Results: The strengths of the elderly were as follows：Confidence: “derived from past hardship” “healthy, independent living” and “having raised a family and contributed to the community.” Abilities: “producing, storing and processing rice and vegetables,” “managing and utilizing snow” “maintaining and improving health” and “self-actualization and social contributions.” Desires: “to continue living locally and independently” “to pass away without burdening others” and “to pass on local traditions and ties to the next generation.” Natural environmental resources: “residential property, arable land and mountain forest assets” and “the natural bounty of a snowy region.” Social ties: “support from familial and community interactions” and “popularity arising from engaging with the local community as a senior citizen.” Opportunities: “close relationships with neighbors” “gathering for health promotion events” and “gatherings for volunteering and hobbies.” Conclusions: This study revealed that the elderly living in regions of heavy snowfall possess a wealth of individual strengths, including abilities, confidence, and desires gleaned from their lives to date, as well as environmental strengths, including the natural environment, culture, and human ties associated with a snowy
