Methods: Five mothers who belong to a support group for children with heart  disease within the same prefecture, and who had brought up children with severe congenital heart disease to the point where the children had gained independence, agreed to cooperate with this research. Data was analyzed using the content analysis method.\nResults and Discussion: The mothers were prepared for their child's death at birth. As the child grew, the mothers overcame the fear of death, and supported the child's efforts to live. When the children reached school age, the mothers' child raising habits changed to a perspective of ascertaining what the children can do and cannot do by themselves. The mothers' accumulated efforts to foster the capacity for self-determination in their children were successful and, at the end of the compulsory education period, the mothers could leave decisions to the children to make for themselves. By the time the children were about to enter the workforce,\nthey had secured their own freedoms and had become independent.
