The aim of the study is to describe what kind of“ turning points” and thinking surrounded the circumstances that gave rise to the dispute between the woman and her doctor and the independent midwife who attended her.\n　Inherent to the woman considering herself a “victim” and her decision to take legal action was the thinking that “even while experiencing long-term remorse for the stillborn baby, she remained unconvinced of the cause and was searching for the cause”, “through participating in an association of parents who had suffered the loss of a child, she became aware of the differences between herself and other participants who had lost a child through purely accidental causes of no one’s making”, and “she lost her trust in midwives when neither her expectation that the midwife would carry out the contractual responsibilities agreed upon, nor her expectation of the midwife’s competence as a professional, were met”. While the woman looked to the courts to rule in her favor in order to restore her faith in herself, she also experienced the fear of continuing to do battle with the defendants.
